8 Practical Ways to Keep Yourself Self-Motivated
Do you have a lot of great ideas to act upon but just don't get to do any of them? Do you start doing good work but leave it in between? Do you feel you just can't take the intiative to do anything more right now, because you're overwhelmed by life already? Here are a few things I learnt from my own life and experience. It might help you.
1. Have long-term dreams and practical short-term goals. My dream, for example, is to positively change English literature studies in India, and some of my goals are: finish reading a particular book, complete a project within a deadline, etc.
2. Don't distract yourself with too many diverse activities. Everything you do should ultimately work towards your goals and dreams. Even a movie I watch usually gives me insights on a project I'm working on.
3. Push yourself to do more by putting yourself in situations from which you can't escape. Even as I started the humungous work on our 8-volume encyclopaedia, I announced to everyone I'm doing it so that i cant be lazy and escape from it!
4. Focus on your achievements, however small they seem; rather than ignore them out of shyness or modesty. I feel proud about myself with an almost childish glee for every little wonderful thing I do!
5. Realize that it's okay to fail. Failures are not the end of the world, but important stepping stones to success. I have, some time long ago, stopped feeling guilty about failures and mistakes. It's okay, I will do better next time, I tell myself.
6. Feel passionate about everything you do. Even when I do routine things like brushing my teeth, I deliberately do it mindfully, and it has now become my character to love everything I do.
7. Fight the urge to complain about various things in life and the urge to feel self-pity. Even when life is not so great, I tell myself and others that I'm perfectly okay. I refuse to feel like the victim and wallow in self-pity.
8. Don't think and theorize too much. It's better to take life as it comes and enjoy joys and sorrows alike. I have learnt that if we want to think and worry, we will have lots of reasons for that. Intellectual thinking is good to some extent but i don't let it turn into emotional worrying. I keep myself so busy all day with all sorts of wonderful activities that there's no time for fretting and complaining. Life is beautiful.
